Album Premiere: Early James ‘Singing for My Supper’

On Friday, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach will release Early James’ Singing for My Supper, the 13th record on his Easy Eye Sound label. This is the debut full-length from Early, an Alabama native whose music draws from a blues and folk palette, often delivered with gruff and raspy vocals. The songs themselves contain elements of Southern Gothic tinged with a wry sense of humor. Auerbach, who co-produced the album with David “Fergie” Ferguson, reflects, “Early has an obvious love and appreciation for the past in his music but he’s also naturally irreverent about it. It’s that fantastic combination that I love so much about him….This may have been his first album but he led us down roads we’ve never been on before here at easy eye.  I love this record.”

Early himself adds, “Reviews, good or bad…it’s quite a relief to have the album finally out. I think it’s the perfect snapshot of the sound I was going for, and Dan nailed it. I never really knew what I wanted my first album to sound like, but this is it. It put me in a super vulnerable position to work with Dan, Fergie and Allen and their all-star studio band. I guess I was a little worried the album wouldn’t sound like me, especially after our first EP just being me and Adrian [Marmolejo] acoustic, but I think we put together something honest and transparent. I am eternally grateful to everyone who helped make it happen, soup to nuts.”

Today we premiere the album, via a YouTube playlist that begins with the video for “Blue Pill Blues.” James will support the record while touring with The Lone Bellow and The Black Keys, with the dates listed below the stream.
