Frank Riley: A True Independent in Every Sense of the Word

At the NIVA 2025 conference, Frank Riley was honored with the inaugural NIVA Independent Visionary Award.
In conversation with longtime friend Michael Dorf, Frank reflected on four decades of artist-first advocacy—from repping the Violent Femmes since 1982 to helping shape careers for Husker Dü, The Replacements, the Indigo Girls, Emmylou Harris, and so many more. He spoke of what it means to truly know the artists you represent, to share inspiration as a two-way street, and to keep showing up for the music—even after all these years. Frank has been a beacon for working musicians, a steady hand through uncertainty, and a relentless advocate for independence—refusing to sell High Road Touring and helping lay the foundation for the National Independent Talent Organization at a critical moment for our industry.
