Aterciopelados

Biography

Aterciopelados is Colombia’s flagship rock band and one of the most influential and consistent projects in Ibero-American music. Led by Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago, the group has spent more than three decades building a singular musical language that fuses rock, Latin American rhythms, ancestral roots and sonic experimentation, shaping a powerful, critical and deeply relevant artistic identity.

Since their breakthrough in the 1990s, Aterciopelados has transformed rock in Spanish with a mestizo, irreverent and sensitive perspective, opening new paths for storytelling within Latin American music. With 10 studio albums, 2 live albums, 4 Latin Grammy Awards (most recently in 2024), and two Grammy Award nominations (1998 and 2026), the band has marked generations with visionary songs that brought Latin rock into a global conversation.

Their music is a unique blend of rock energy, punk attitude, popular Latin American sounds and ancestral exploration. Over the years, their artistic evolution has been grounded in clear and courageous messages: female empowerment, environmental awareness, diversity, memory, and the defense of mutual understanding. This coherence has established Aterciopelados as a cultural reference beyond music. Media outlets such as Billboard have recognized several of their albums as masterpieces of Latin rock; Rolling Stone ranked Río (2008) among the greatest Latin rock albums of all time; and Andrea Echeverri was named one of the 50 most influential figures in Latin pop in 2025.

On stage, Aterciopelados is a powerful surge of energy and emotion. Their ability to connect with diverse audiences has taken them to major festivals and venues across South America, the United States, Mexico, Europe and Oceania, solidifying their role as ambassadors of Latin American alternative music worldwide. In 2024, the El Dorado Tour spanned three continents with 63 concerts, celebrating one of the most iconic Latin rock albums of the 1990s and reaffirming the band’s intergenerational relevance.

Their repertoire includes definitive anthems of rock in Spanish such as Bolero Falaz, Florecita Rockera, Maligno, El Estuche, Baracunatana, Cosita Seria, Luz Azul and Rompecabezas. Throughout their career, they have collaborated with essential figures of Ibero-American music, including León Cordero (Bunbury), Susana Baca, Soda Stereo, Phil Manzanera, Kevin Johansen, Rubén Albarrán (Café Tacuba), Julieta Venegas, Bomba Estéreo, Carlos Vives, among many others.

At the end of 2024, they released “Agradecida”, a delicate yet powerful fusion of waltz and alternative rock featuring Gustavo Santaolalla, which served as a prelude to Genes Rebeldes (2025), their tenth studio album. This record is a creative manifesto in which rebellion is understood as a conscious and transformative act. Musically, the album moves between rock, blues, Latin rhythms and electronic exploration, connecting the ancestral with the contemporary and the cosmic. Genes Rebeldes reaffirms Aterciopelados as pioneers, innovators and profoundly free artists.

In 2026, the band celebrates the 30th anniversary of La Pipa de la Paz with a special tour revisiting one of the most influential albums in Latin American rock, originally nominated for the Grammy Awards and produced by Phil Manzanera. More than an anniversary, this return is an urgent call for reconciliation, care for the planet and collective healing. With renewed versions of emblematic songs and a stage production designed for theaters, festivals and major arenas, Aterciopelados once again proves that their music does not belong to the past—it remains necessary, challenging, luminous and deeply human.

Today, Aterciopelados continues as an independent, visionary and essential band. Their voice, coherence and artistic commitment keep shaping the pulse of contemporary Latin American music, reminding us that creation itself is an act of resistance, love and hope.
