Jack J
Biography
Jack J is Jack Jutson, an Australian-born, Vancouver-based producer, songwriter, and performer known for creating emotionally driven, genre-agnostic alternative pop music.
A central figure in Vancouver’s underground music community, Jack co-founded the influential Mood Hut collective and record label, which helped define a distinctly warm, melodic, and introspective West Coast approach to dance music. He is also one half of the acclaimed production and DJ duo Pender Street Steppers, whose releases played a key role in shaping a wave of emotionally resonant club music emerging from the city in the mid-2010s. During this period, Jack released a back-to back pair of solo EPs before placing the Jack J project on hiatus for nearly seven years.
He re-emerged in 2023 with his debut album Opening the Door, a collection of lush Balearic-dub inflected songs moving fluidly between late-night ambient jazz, melancholy bedroom pop, and sensual quiet-storm R&B, unified by a deeply personal and unmistakable style. In support of the record, Jack formed his long-awaited live band and toured throughout Europe and the United States. In 2024, he followed with Blue Desert, an album that expanded his songwriting voice while further refining his intricate yet organic production approach. The record deepened the emotional world introduced on its predecessor, emphasizing atmosphere, restraint, and tonal clarity. Returning to the road with a full ensemble (drummer, bassist, and saxophonist) Jack brought his studio work into a more physical, expressive setting, where rich vocal harmonies, melodic bass lines, and open arrangements allow the songs to evolve from night to night.
Entirely independent and self-sufficient, Jack writes, produces, performs, and mixes all of his music himself, maintaining a singular artistic vision across every stage of creation.
Since 2019, he has hosted a monthly show on NTS Radio alongside Liam Butler. The program reflects a deep and wide-ranging musical knowledge, spanning ambient, folk, dub, soft rock, experimental electronics, and obscure private-press recordings. His selections trace subtle connections across eras and genres, offering insight into the influences that inform his songwriting and production. Functioning as both archive and laboratory, the show extends his artistic world beyond the studio and stage.
Jack is also the founder of the long-running Libra Mix platform, a respected online archive hosting DJ mixes from some of the most compelling underground selectors from around the world.
After several headlining tours in Europe and the US, opening dates with Jessica Pratt and Men I Trust, Jack is currently in the studio writing and recording new work.
