Watch Christopher Owens’ Intimate Video Tour Diary
Christopher Owens, formerly of Girls, has released many self-made YouTube tour diaries over the past several years. His latest, documenting his recent tour in support of his solo debut Lysandre, is a particularly interesting watch.
It’s soundtracked by Nina Simone’s exceptionally sad, powerful cover of Janis Ian’s “Stars”, using footage from Owens’ life on the road to interpret the song. There are typical tour diary things, like footage taken inside empty venues, on the bus, and backstage, and of his bandmates eating pizza. But there are also more personal moments, like Owens looking over his own review from The New York Times as Simone sings “You never can believe they really loved you,” or when the camera pans an ecstatic audience from stage, as she sings, “But you’ll never know the pain/ Of using a name you never owned.”
