Ambrosia Parsley had a tumultuous kind of success with her former band Shivaree, developing a sizable cult following (and earning prime placement in Kill Bill Vol. 2) on one hand and having an entire album fail to get an official U.S. release on the other. Given those ups and downs, it’s understandable that she’d eventually want to step away from the music business entirely, which she did in 2006 when she relocated to the Catskills to raise her son.

It’s hard to keep creativity bottled up, though, and last year Parsley released her debut solo album Weeping Cherry in France. Now Barbés Records is giving it a belated U.S. release on April 28. One of the album’s standout tracks is “Skin and Bone,” which infuses bluesy grind with a slanted, noisy aesthetic, and proves that Parsley’s time off hasn’t done a thing to dull her skills.

Parsley plays March 5 at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City and in the same venue May 14 for an official Weeping Cherry album release show.
