NYLON Video premiere: Tristan Prettyman’s “The Rebound”

Fact: Everything is better when it’s karaoke’d.

If you don’t believe me, just think of your favorite song, and then search for the karaoke version of it on YouTube. Good luck finding a song that hasn’t been turned into a singalong.

No one knows that better than Tristan Prettyman. The California singer-songwriter (and onetime Roxy model) turned the music video for her track “Rebound” into a full-fledged lyric video. Only, instead of those cheesy what-does-this-have-to-do-with-the-song backing visuals we’re used to seeing at our favorite karaoke dive bars, this one makes total sense. “The video was definitely meant to be more tongue-in-cheek, fun,” offers up Prettyman, whose third album Cedar + Gold came out at the end of 2012. She adds, “I think it does justice in following the playfulness of the song.”

And if you’re paying close attention to the lyrics and are left wondering, “Wait, did she seriously pick a guy up at the supermarket?” we’ve got the answer to that one–yes, that really did happen. “It’s mostly inspired by my own personal experiences that happened at Trader Joe’s, of course,” admits the singer-songwriter. “That, more than anything, led me to writing the song. [I wrote it] in about 20 minutes, after coming home from the store.”
