Listen: Sam Amidon Performs on WNYC’s “Soundcheck”
Sam Amidon is a guest on the latest episode of WNYC’s Soundcheck. He stopped by the WNYC studios ahead of his performance at Celebrate Brooklyn! last weekend to talk with Soundcheck host John Schaefer about the making of his new album, The Following Mountain, and perform three songs from the album live with electric guitarist Grey McMurray: “Juma Mountain,” “Warren,” and “Another Story Told.” You can listen to the interview and performance below.
The Following Mountain represents a new approach for Sam Amidon, who shifts here from his previous norm of re-working traditional folk songs and presents nine wholly original compositions, with some lyrics drawing on traditional sources. The album was created with producer Leo Abrahams and frequent Amidon collaborator Shahzad Ismaily, with a rare guest appearance by drummer Milford Graves.
To pick up a copy of The Following Mountain, head to iTunes and the Nonesuch Store, where CD and vinyl orders include a download of the complete album at checkout, and listen to the album on Apple Music and Spotify.
Earlier this week, Amidon announced a fall tour of North America. The tour starts in Seattle in September and continues with shows in Portland, San Francisco, LA, Denver, Milwaukee, Chicago, Toronto, DC, Philadelphia, and NYC. He has also added new Scandinavian dates on his previously announced European tour.
