Michael Penn, startlingly astute singer-songwriter
When not producing (Liz Phair, the Wallflowers) or keeping house with wife Aimee Mann, Michael Penn is a startlingly astute singer-songwriter who's largely slipped through both critical and commercial cracks. Still best known for his 1989 hit "No Myth," this Romeo in black jeans has recorded four excellent albums of Beatles-y pop and smart, Elvis Costello-esque lyricism that have, inexplicably, earned him increasingly less recognition. For his latest and finest work, 2000's MP4: Days Since a Lost Time Accident, he might as well have released the record on an ailing indie label considering the feeble press push he received from Epic. With any luck, Penn will finally find some long overdue success with his upcoming fifth album. -- Jimmy Draper, SF Gate
