The Trouble With Templeton
The Trouble With Templeton are a 5 piece alternative rock band from Brisbane, Australia, fronted by the enigmatic, fiercely talented singer/songwriter, Thomas Calder.
In April 2011 Thomas Calder at age 20, gathered all the gear he could find, and recorded mini-album “BLEEDERS” in his Brisbane home. Even the most cursory airing of the striking debut will leave the listener with no doubt: this boy is special. Tom released this record independently, to a swathe of incredibly loving reviews from media, industry and a blossoming number of fans.“I Wrote A Novel” was played on Triple J & community radio nationally in early 2012,the song reaching #8 on the Australian Independent Radio Chart, his videos (made by Tom and his brother Josh Calder) had a huge response from blogs worldwide & national TV play, he toured extensively, and the album was on the longlist for the AMP (Australian Music Prize).
In June 2012 the act underwent a spectacular transformation – they became an EPIC, clever, stunningly beautiful 5-piece band. The new band members know how to compliment and build on Thomas’ voice and songwriting skills perfectly. The band went into the studio with awesome Brisbane Producer Matt Redlich (Emma Louise, Hungry Kids of Hungary), and has just completed their first full-length album, “ROOKIE”. This will be released in Australia on 2nd August, and soon after in the UK, US & Europe.
The first two singles – “Six Months In A Cast” and “Like A Kid” – cracked Top 10 Triple J airplay, coming in at #4 and #7 o the Australian Independent Radio Chart respectively, and both videos enjoying rotation on Rage & Channel V, with “…Kid” featuring as Rage’s Indie Clip of the Week in March 2013. “Six Months…” was also ITunes single of the week (with 35,000 downloads in Australia & NZ in that one week).
“Six Months In A Cast” will be coming out through Communion Records in the UK & Europe in October 2013, and the band will be heading to the UK to play shows to celebrate that release.
It has been a huge 18 months for TTWT, playing with some big international artists (Of Monsters And Men, Father John Misty, Half Moon Run, Jake Bugg) and some of Australia’s finest acts (Julia Stone, Sparkadia, Husky, Matt Corby). The band were a highlight of Big Sound 2012, they headlined the exclusive Communion Music Night in Melbourne, at SXSW and in New York, played Harvest Festival (Grizzly Bear, Sigur Ros & Beck) & legendary Falls Festival, VIC (Flaming Lips, Hot Chip).
Templeton have already visited the US twice, playing Filter’s Culture Collide (LA) and CMJ (NY) in October 2012, and returned for 14 shows in March 2013, at SXSW, CMW, LA & NY, resulting in some big interest from industry and media there. The band were one of only three artists from SxSW “Spotlighted” on “Last Call With Carson Daly” (NBC, viewership around 1.5 million), and they signed with Frank Riley & Al Marano at High Road Touring in the US, and Adam Countryman at The Agency Group in Canada. That same month “Six Months…” was playlisted at 160 College radio stations spending 4 weeks in the top 200 chart and making an appearance in 40 Top 30 station charts, and had spins at Specialist radio including Live 105 in San Francisco. Prior to that in October 2012, “I Wrote A Novel” was #18 Most Added at College Radio, Top 30 Chart on 12 stations & playlisted at 140.
In March 2013 Thomas Calder won the APRA PDA Songwriting Award, and came 3rd in the International Songwriting Competition’s “Rock” Category for “Six Months In A Cast”.
